The Hiland Hall School
A Progressive Primary and Middle School in Bennington, Vermont
(802) 442-3868
Multi-Age Classroom Teacher
Full Time in Bennington, Vermont
The Hiland Hall School is an independent progressive K–8 school where students ages 5–14 learn in a multi-age classroom setting. Our work is grounded in close observation of children, careful record keeping, and reflection. Our approach is student-centered, allowing teachers to develop curriculum in an emergent and collaborative way. Growing out of the Prospect School tradition, and inspired by the educational work of John Dewey and other progressive educators, The Hiland Hall School is committed to fostering curiosity, responsibility, and intellectual engagement in an atmosphere of trust and respect.
About the Position
This position is designed with emerging educators in mind and offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced teachers in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Because opportunities to join the Hiland Hall faculty arise infrequently, we view this as a singular opportunity for an educator who is interested in developing their practice within a community of experienced progressive educators.
The successful candidate will have opportunities for mentorship, supervision, and collaboration with Hiland Hall founder and Teacher Emeritus Jessica Howard; long-time educator and former Prospect School teacher Peg Howes; Quena Crain, who is in her [10th/11th] year at Hiland Hall; and Brennan Cofiell, who is in his 10th year with the school.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
-
Intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm, humility, and a desire to continue learning
-
Interest in progressive education, inquiry-based learning, and emergent curriculum
-
A willingness to teach across disciplines and follow student interests as they emerge
-
The ability to take a descriptive rather than judgmental stance when observing children and their work

Interest in documenting student learning through narrative observation and written reports (we do not use traditional grades to communicate student progress)
-
Comfort working closely with colleagues, families, and volunteers
-
The ability to support individual learners while contributing to a strong classroom community
